The term avatar refers to a manifestation or incarnation of an entity or deity. In Hinduism incarnations of Vishnu are referred to as avatars.

Other Uses
A forum avatar is a small picture near a member's name on an internet forum. The picture is used to uniquely identify that person more quickly than checking the name, and also as a stylistic statement.
